Dining Out in NYC with IBS or SIBO
Thankfully, NYC offers several restaurants that cater to unique dietary needs. These eateries go the extra mile—providing menus with gluten-free options, low-FODMAP dishes, and other adjustments that keep your tummy happy without sacrificing flavor.
Japanese Cuisine
Japanese cuisine offers a wonderful opportunity to enjoy delicious, IBS or SIBO-friendly meals, thanks to its focus on fresh, simple ingredients. Whether you’re a sushi lover or prefer cooked dishes, there are plenty of options to suit your dietary needs. Here are some tips to help you order with confidence:
- Sashimi: Opt for fresh, simple sashimi. It’s pure, high-quality fish, making it an excellent low-FODMAP choice.
- Sushi Rolls: Choose basic rolls like cucumber or tuna rolls. If needed, ask for substitutions to keep them tummy-friendly.
- Appetizers: Edamame is a fantastic option. It’s high in fiber, low-FODMAP, and makes for a tasty, satisfying starter.
- Non-Seafood Options: Not a fan of fish? No problem! Go for teriyaki chicken or beef, and pair it with steamed vegetables on the side.
Pro tip: Come packing with your own soy sauce substitute. If you’re avoiding gluten or soy, consider bringing your own tamari or coconut aminos as a substitute. It’s a simple way to enjoy your meal without worry.
Where to go? There are tons of great sushi restaurants in every neighborhood, but for some unique dishes, try Crave Sushi Bar.
Greek Cuisine
I often recommend Greek restaurants to clients because they offer a variety of simply prepared, incredibly healthy dishes.
- Greek Salad: A classic option with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, and feta cheese. To keep it low FODMAP, ask them to hold the onions. This tweak will still leave you with a vibrant and flavorful dish.
- Grilled Proteins: Choose from an array of grilled fish, calamari, shrimp, or lamb. These options are often prepared with just a drizzle of olive oil, a sprinkle of oregano, and a squeeze of lemon—simple yet delicious!
- Greek Roasted Potatoes: Don’t forget the wonderfully seasoned roasted potatoes. With their signature hint of oregano and lemon, they make for a satisfying and wholesome side dish.
Where to go? My favorite Greek food places include:
- Avra near Grand Central
- Milos in midtown (for a special occasion)
- Kyclades in Astoria or the East Village (this is a more affordable/casual option)
Quick Salad Bowl
If you’re running around town or working in an office, fast-casual salad and bowl restaurants like Sweetgreen, CAVA, Chopt, or Dig are wonderful options. While they may be chains, they all have one key feature in common—they allow you to customize your order completely. These restaurants are quick, convenient, and versatile, letting you tailor your meal exactly to your preferences.
You can modify a pre-existing salad or bowl option or build your own from scratch with fresh, wholesome ingredients. Most locations offer a variety of choices, including plenty of fresh veggies, whole grains, legumes, tofu, grilled chicken, and other proteins.
Best of all, you can usually get any sauce or dressing on the side to suit your taste. If you’re gluten-free, you’re in good hands, as these spots typically have plenty of gluten-free selections.
Pizza!
It wouldn’t be a NYC round-up without mentioning pizza. For those who are gluten-free, New York City has some incredible options that won’t disappoint!
PizzArte
PizzArte spot serves the absolute BEST gluten-free pizza in NYC (bold statement, I know!).
Crafted Neapolitan-style, their pizzas feature a perfectly thin crust that’s both crispy and flavorful. PizzArte isn’t just about amazing gluten-free pizza either—they also offer gluten-free pasta options that are equally swoon-worthy.
Bakeries and Bagels
If you have Celiac disease or simply prefer to avoid gluten, there’s no need to miss out on NYC’s incredible food scene. This city offers a variety of dedicated gluten-free spots that are nourishing, delicious, and completely stress-free.
Modern Bread & Bagel
Modern Bread & Bagel is a true game-changer for gluten-free dining. What started as a cozy bakery and Kosher deli on the Upper West Side has blossomed into a beloved gem with locations in both NY and LA.
Their menu boasts everything from bagel sandwiches to fresh-baked artisanal items like high-fiber seed bread, focaccia, and pita. And don’t get me started on their sweet treats—their chocolate zucchini bread is so rich and moist you’d never guess it’s gluten-free! Ah-mazing!
Whether you’re stopping by for breakfast, lunch, or a snack, this spot never disappoints.
By the Way Bakery
For those with a sweet tooth, By the Way Bakery is a must-visit. This charming bakery specializes in gluten-free confections that are so good they’ll have everyone coming back for more—whether they’re gluten-free or not!
Their selection includes cupcakes, muffins, scones, brownies, and beautifully crafted cakes for any occasion. One standout is their ginger pumpkin tarte, which makes Thanksgiving extra special in my household—every guest, gluten-free or not, absolutely adores it. It’s proof that gluten-free treats can be every bit as indulgent and satisfying as their traditional counterparts.
She Wolf Bakery
Although not an actual storefront, She Wolf Bakery produces the BEST sourdough bread you’ll find in all of NYC. Sourdough bread is not only delicious but may also be easier to digest compared to regular bread due to its low-FODMAP properties (1). She Wolf’s breads are a highlight at local NYC Greenmarkets, including the bustling mega market in Union Square. Make sure to keep an eye out for their stall and snag a loaf while you can—it’s worth it!

Therapist Specializing in IBS – Dr. Julia King
IBS and anxiety often go hand-in-hand, creating a challenging cycle that can feel overwhelming. Anxiety can intensify IBS symptoms, while those very symptoms can heighten feelings of stress and worry.

Pelvic Floor Physical Therapists
Did you know that gas, bloating, and constipation can sometimes be caused by pelvic floor dysfunction? The pelvic floor plays a vital role in supporting your digestive system, and when it isn’t functioning properly, it can lead to discomfort and motility issues.
Pelvic floor physical therapy offers a gentle and supportive way to address these challenges. By working with a qualified therapist, you can learn techniques to relax and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, potentially reducing symptoms and improving your overall digestive health.
Where we recommend you go:
- Solstice Physiotherapy – Owners Dr. Erika Michitsch and Dr. Kara Mortfoligio, along with their team, have helped numerous clients improve constipation, pelvic pain, prolapse, and more. Watch my interview with Erika and Kara and learn how pelvic floor dysfunction can lead to digestive symptoms.
- Inspira Physical Therapy – Dr. Melanie Carminatti specializes in pelvic floor dysfunction, particularly as a result of conditions like endometriosis and hypermobility issues like Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.
- And if you aren’t in NYC but still want to benefit from pelvic floor physical therapy from the comfort and privacy of your own home, PelvicSense offers online programs that can help resolve bloating and constipation.
